A tropical climate all year round
Mauritius has a tropical climate with two main seasons: a warm and humid summer from November to April, and a milder, drier winter from May to October.
The seasons are therefore reversed compared with Europe.
During the southern summer, temperatures are higher and tropical showers can be more frequent. They are often short and intense, quickly giving way to sunshine.
The southern winter is generally drier and cooler, with particularly pleasant temperatures for exploring the island.
But keep in mind: there is no single “best time” to visit Mauritius. It all depends on what you want to do!
May to October: an ideal time to explore the island
From May to October, the southern winter brings pleasant temperatures and days that are perfect for excursions.
It’s a particularly great time to discover the island’s diverse landscapes.
This is the perfect season to explore Black River Gorges National Park, discover the landscapes of Chamarel, visit the Pamplemousses Botanical Garden or explore Port Louis.
And if you’re in the Pamplemousses area, make sure to stop by L’Aventure du Sucre in Beau Plan! A unique destination dedicated to sugar and rum in the north of the island, this museum, housed in a former sugar factory, takes you on an immersive journey through the history of Mauritius and explores how sugar cane has shaped the island’s landscapes, culture and economy. The visit can take anywhere from 45 minutes to 3 hours, depending on your pace.
November to April: summer in Mauritius
From November onwards, the southern summer gradually sets in.
Temperatures rise and the weather becomes warmer and more humid. This is also the time of year when tropical showers can be more frequent.
But a shower in Mauritius doesn’t necessarily mean a whole day of rain! Showers are often brief, and blue skies can return just a few minutes later.
This season is therefore perfect for enjoying the lagoon and taking part in water-based activities.
It’s time to grab your mask and snorkel and head to Blue Bay or Trou aux Biches, take a boat trip to Île aux Cerfs, go kayaking around Île d’Ambre, or simply relax on the beaches of Mont Choisy, Pereybère or Belle Mare.
What if it rains during your holiday?
There’s no reason to let a few clouds spoil your stay!
Tropical showers are part of Mauritius’ climate and can be a great opportunity to discover another side of the island.
