INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM DAY 2026

L’Aventure du Sucre celebrates “Museums Unite a Divided World” with special reduced rates for Mauritians and residents on 16 and 18 May 2026

On the occasion of International Museum Day (IMD), celebrated every year on 18 May, L’Aventure du Sucre joins nearly 37,000 participating institutions across more than 158 countries in highlighting the 2026 theme chosen by the International Council of Museums (ICOM): Museums Unite a Divided World.

A theme that strongly resonates in Mauritius

At a time marked by growing social fragmentation and global polarisation, museums are more than ever emerging as spaces of trust, dialogue and understanding. L’Aventure du Sucre fully embodies this mission: a place where memories, cultures and generations come together around a shared heritage – that of an island built on diversity and shaped by the sugar industry.

Mauritius has made coexistence not simply an ideal to aspire to, but one of the very foundations of its identity. In a world still searching for ways to live together harmoniously, Mauritius stands as a living and enlightening historical example.

As a member of ICOM, L’Aventure du Sucre is fully committed to this international movement promoting dialogue, inclusion and mutual understanding within and between communities.

A reinvented museum and a more vibrant story than ever

Located within the heart of an authentic 19th-century sugar factory, L’Aventure du Sucre is the first Mauritian cultural site to receive both the Made in Moris label, recognising local value creation, and the Blue Oasis certification for its eco-responsible commitment.

Since 2026, visitors have been invited to discover an entirely redesigned visitor experience, encouraging them to interact, experiment and better understand the complete transformation process of sugarcane. Spanning more than 5,000 m² of immersive experiences, the permanent exhibition reveals sugarcane in all its dimensions – human, technical, economic and environmental.

“Visitors discover here a deeply human story – the story of the women and men who built Mauritius. Sugarcane is the common thread running throughout: both the source of divisions and the cradle of cultural blending, it is also the field where the ingenuity of a people found expression through transformation, innovation and resilience. From sugarcane to sugar, rum and energy production, the site unveils the many secrets of a familiar plant that continues to surprise us,” explains Edwige Gufflet.

This is particularly true of rum production. Through the New Grove Distillery experience, the exhibition showcases a constantly evolving expertise that today enables Mauritius to produce world-class rums. New Grove Emotion 1969 is a striking example, having been crowned World’s Best Rum at the International Sugarcane Spirits Awards in 2020 before receiving the “Rum Revelation” award at the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles in 2025.

The result of more than two years of work involving both local and international expertise, the new L’Aventure du Sucre visitor route unfolds through nine clear and captivating sequences combining interactive technologies, archive imagery, sound installations, animated models, large-format videos and playful educational displays.

The site also offers a free mobile application serving as an audioguide available in nine languages – including Mauritian Creole – allowing visitors of all ages to enjoy an enriched and fully autonomous experience.

Special rates for Mauritians and residents

To mark this special occasion and encourage as many people as possible to (re)discover their heritage, L’Aventure du Sucre will offer 50% reduced rates on Saturday 16 and Monday 18 May 2026, exclusively for Mauritians and residents.

Admission prices will therefore be:
