The challenge was simple: transform reclaimed wooden pallets into genuine works of art.
With paintbrushes in hand, the participants gave free rein to their creativity, decorating the pallets with delicate floral designs inspired by the rich beauty of Mauritius’ natural landscapes. Throughout the workshop, artist Joshila Dhaby guided them with warmth and encouragement, sharing her techniques, practical advice, and above all, her passion for art.
Workshops that Bring Communities Together
Since 2022, L’Aventure du Sucre has been organising community workshops that bring people together around essential values: inclusion, creativity, and sustainability. Held in collaboration with the Terra Foundation, these workshops offer much more than a hands-on activity. They create opportunities for connection, discovery, and personal growth, allowing everyone to express their creativity in a welcoming and supportive environment.
For this latest edition, seven women from the NGOs Caritas Solitude, Caritas Pamplemousses, Comité de Quartier de Cité Pamplemousses, Jeunes Créatifs Paul & Virginie, SAFIRE, and the Association de Développement de Pamplemousses (ADP) were invited to discover the artistic world of Joshila Dhaby.
A self-taught Mauritian artist, Joshila Dhaby began her artistic journey with watercolours and acrylic painting before turning to street art, where she has developed a distinctive style, particularly through the use of stencil techniques.
Deeply inspired by the tropical landscapes that surround her, nature lies at the heart of her artistic practice.
Her work has been exhibited in cities around the world, including Copenhagen, Bristol, Miami, Dubai, Johannesburg, and Ringsted, helping showcase Mauritian contemporary art on the international stage.
Giving Wood a Second Life
Under Joshila’s guidance, the reclaimed wooden pallets gradually evolved into vibrant nature-inspired creations. Flowers, foliage, and colourful botanical motifs transformed these wooden surfaces into decorative pieces, demonstrating how everyday materials can be reimagined through creativity and upcycling.
The finished artworks will soon be displayed at Le Fangourin, where they will enhance the restaurant’s spaces. It is a meaningful example of upcycling in action, turning a functional object into a lasting decorative creation.
Through this initiative, L’Aventure du Sucre reaffirms its commitment to the circular economy, the sharing of knowledge, and strengthening community ties.
So, during your next visit to Fangourin, take a moment to admire these colourful pallets—they tell the story of a truly inspiring human adventure.
