After crushing the sugar cane to extract its juice, remains the fibrous part called “bagasse”. This biomass is burned in the thermal power plants of the sugar mills to produce steam and electricity. The surplus electricity not used by the sugar mills supplies the country with 20 % of its needs, making it possible to replace part of the fossil fuels with renewable and local energy.
