At L’Aventure du Sucre, every visit is an invitation to journey through the history of Mauritius and its rich sugar heritage. Today, a new surprise awaits visitors at the heart of the museum experience: a completely redesigned display in the exhibition space entitled “Sugar Through the Ages.”
Blending heritage, craftsmanship and indulgence, this new installation features a spectacular table setting where every detail tells a story. The scene is so realistic that visitors may almost be tempted to sit down and sample the treats on display!
A New Way of Telling the Story of Sugar
This exhibition space offers a true journey around the world of sugar through immersive scenography, interactive displays and a timeline tracing 2,000 years of sugarcane history.
At its centre stands a beautifully laid table resembling a lavish dessert feast, inviting visitors to discover how a simple taste—the sweetness of sugar—has travelled across civilizations and shaped entire economies.
The first element to capture attention is undoubtedly the impressive collection of desserts displayed on the table. Delicately coloured macarons, indulgent tarts, meringues, refined biscuits, caramels and sweets appear as though they have just arrived from a pastry shop.
These creations are the work of Céline and Valérie, artisans from Zafer Inik, who handcrafted each piece in faience. Behind every pastry lie countless hours of modelling, painting and finishing, carefully reproducing the textures, colours and intricate details of the original desserts.
The result is truly remarkable: a delightful visual illusion that inspires both wonder and curiosity.
More Than Just Pastries
The pastries are not the only stars of this new display.
Surrounding them is a carefully selected collection of antique objects that enrich the setting: dessert and tea cutlery, a cake server, a compote dish, serving platters, a flower-filled vase, candlesticks and candles come together to create an elegant table seemingly awaiting its guests.
A few more unexpected elements also catch the eye. A deck of tarot cards and a set of dominoes left on the table invite visitors to imagine the conversations and moments of conviviality that might once have taken place around such a feast.
This attention to detail brings the scenography to life, transforming the visit into an immersive experience where each visitor can create their own story.
Go Behind the Scenes of This Sweet Display
Behind this installation lie weeks of preparation, creation and assembly. From the crafting of the faience desserts to the selection of antique objects, every element has been carefully chosen to tell a story and spark curiosity.
The next time you visit L’Aventure du Sucre, take a moment to stop and admire this deliciously enticing display. Just a word of warning: these pastries are so realistic that they may leave you craving a sweet treat before the end of your visit!
