Synopsis

On October 1, 2022, the vessel Plastic Odyssey set sail from Marseille for a three-year journey around the world, navigating along coastlines most affected by plastic pollution. On board are young sailors, engineers, and scientists developing practical and accessible solutions to turn plastic waste into a valuable resource for local communities.

After stopping in Senegal, Guinea, and Lebanon, the expedition now heads toward Latin America and Polynesia. We reconnect with Simon Bernard and Alexandre Dechelotte as they continue their journey and meet local changemakers. In Brazil and Colombia, Simon and Alex discover innovative ways of recycling plastic, including its use in building homes made entirely from recycled plastic. Through continuous collaboration with African entrepreneurs met during the first stopovers, a global network of micro-factories and plastic entrepreneurs is beginning to emerge.

Leaving Latin America for Asia, the Plastic Odyssey team takes on an unprecedented challenge in Polynesia: attempting to collect and recycle more than 10 tons of waste piled up along the shores of Henderson Atoll, a small 38 km² island sadly known for having the highest density of plastic debris in the world. A true “mission impossible” aimed at protecting nature, raising public awareness, and helping the inhabitants of the Pitcairn Islands transform this waste into construction materials. The great plastic odyssey continues…
