On 10 and 11 June, the teams at L’Aventure du Sucre took part in two environmental awareness sessions led by Rubina from Mission Verte. These workshops aimed to reinforce the importance of the fundamental principles of responsible resource management: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Return to the Earth.

Raising Awareness to Inspire Action

Protecting the environment is a shared responsibility that is built every day through simple yet essential actions.

Led by Rubina from Mission Verte, these sessions highlighted the vital role played by this Mauritian NGO in reducing environmental impact by promoting waste sorting, recycling, composting and responsible consumption. For over 30 years, Mission Verte has been supporting businesses, schools and citizens in adopting sustainable practices and fostering an eco-conscious culture across Mauritius.

While these good practices are already part of everyday life at L’Aventure du Sucre, the sessions provided an excellent opportunity to refresh everyone’s knowledge and further strengthen our commitment to sustainable development.

Through practical examples and engaging discussions, participants explored the principles of the “5Rs”, which are now recognised as key pillars of waste reduction and responsible consumption:

• Refuse what we do not need;
• Reduce our consumption and waste generation;
• Reuse items to extend their lifespan;
• Recycle recoverable materials;
• Return organic waste to the earth through composting.

Concrete Actions Already in Place

At L’Aventure du Sucre, environmental awareness is an integral part of our corporate social responsibility approach. By encouraging responsible behaviours and strengthening our teams’ knowledge, we help promote a culture of environmental stewardship and the preservation of natural resources.

These discussions also provided an opportunity for employees to share the many initiatives already implemented at L’Aventure du Sucre to adopt more sustainable practices and reduce our environmental footprint.

Among these initiatives are waste sorting, the transformation of organic waste (including food waste and tasting sticks from the Village Boutik) through the BiobiN industrial composter, the recycling of used cooking oil, and the repurposing of vegetable peelings, bones and fish scraps into homemade stocks and sauces. Our commitment is also reflected in our “zero plastic” approach, which includes eliminating plastic straws, using returnable glass bottles and filtered water, recycling glass bottles through the Mahogany Molok collection point, and ensuring that waste electrical and electronic equipment is processed by a specialised recycling partner.
