Every month, we highlight a space from the new museum trail. Today, admire our beautiful chimney, the beating heart of the old sugar factories.
Here, you are not simply discovering a stone tower, but a powerful symbol of Mauritian sugar heritage an imposing silhouette that shaped the rhythm of village life and the lives of cane workers for centuries.
A Monumental Presence
Built in 1895, the chimney rises to a height of 33 meters. Entirely made of finely cut black lava stones, it stands out for its rounded shape a rarity in Mauritius, where industrial chimneys are almost always square.
Visitors find themselves face to face with one of the most powerful symbols of Mauritian sugar heritage. A mirror integrated into the scenography allows the structure to be admired effortlessly… and even invites visitors to take a photo with this iconic silhouette a playful way to connect with the site’s industrial past.
The Village Emblem
This space tells the story of the central role chimneys played in the island’s history. For centuries, no sugar factory could operate without them. They carried away the smoke produced by the combustion of sugarcane fiber, whose energy generated the steam required to power the machinery.
Like true landmarks rising from the landscape, these chimneys also became reference points for the villages that developed around the factories social markers as much as industrial ones.
A Human and Collective Story
As the visit unfolds, you also discover the wide range of small trades that kept the sugar factory running: founder, molder, carpenter, blacksmith… And beyond the factory itself, an entire village revolved around it: shopkeeper, barber, tailor, tinsmith.
This essential human tapestry reveals how sugar cane shaped the everyday life, economy and culture of Mauritius.
