Discovering… “The Origins of The Island”

Ready for a journey through time, to the very birth of Mauritius?

The moment you step into L’Aventure du Sucre, your senses come alive. A cinematic soundscape instantly immerses you in the island’s story. Lights, sounds, and large-scale visuals transport you eight million years back in time, to when Mauritius rose from the depths of the ocean, shaped by powerful volcanic forces. Picture a wild, untouched island where nature alone was writing its story…

Then, at the turn of the 16th century, everything changes. The arrival of the first Dutch navigators marks the opening chapter of human history on the island. And in their ship holds? A plant that would change everything: sugarcane. Introduced by the Dutch, sugarcane quickly became the backbone of four centuries of Mauritian development. It shaped the landscape, transformed the economy, redefined society, influenced politics, and left a lasting imprint on power relations.

From this single plant emerged a complex shared destiny, ultimately leading to the formation of the modern Mauritian nation—today recognized as one of Africa’s most dynamic countries.

L’Aventure du Sucre: far more than a museum

It’s a fully immersive sensory experience where stories, landscapes, and cultures come together. You’ll walk in the footsteps of the island’s earliest inhabitants and discover how sugarcane transformed everyday life.
